Botpress

What is Botpress?

Botpress is a platform for building chatbots and AI agents from the Canadian company of the same name, based in Montreal. A visual workspace lets users design conversation flows, connect knowledge sources and link agents to channels such as websites or messaging apps via integrations; billing is usage-based. The formerly open-source, self-hosted version 12 has been discontinued – new projects run on Botpress Cloud (as of October 2026).

Chatbot

A chatbot is a program that receives questions in text or speech and answers them in a dialogue. Simple chatbots follow fixed rules and decision trees, while modern ones use large language models and understand freely worded requests. Typical uses include customer service, internal help desks and appointment requests – for example a website chat that answers questions about delivery times around the clock.

Conversational AI

Conversational AI covers technologies that enable computers to hold dialogues in natural language, either in writing via chat or spoken via voice assistants. Modern systems are usually based on large language models that understand requests, take the conversation history into account and formulate suitable replies. Organisations use them in customer service, for booking appointments or for internal help desks. Reliable knowledge, clear limits and a handover to people when the AI cannot help are essential.

Intelligent Agents

An intelligent agent is a system that perceives its environment, processes information and chooses actions on its own in order to reach a goal. Today the term usually refers to software built on large language models that follows instructions, draws on knowledge and calls tools such as a search function or an API. How much an agent may do independently should be decided deliberately. Example: an agent answers customer questions using the product documentation.

No-code

No-code refers to tools that let people build applications, automations or websites through graphical interfaces without writing program code. Business teams can implement and test processes themselves instead of waiting for IT development. Limits appear with very specialised requirements, large data volumes or deep integrations. Example: a sales team uses drag and drop to build a flow that sorts and summarises new enquiries.
