AI Project Management in R&D

What is AI Project Management in R&D?

AI project management in research and development covers two things: steering projects in which AI is being built, and using AI to support R&D projects. Typical tasks include summarising literature, structuring experiment plans, tracking milestones and documenting results. Specialist decisions and approvals should remain with people.

How KI.ordo helps

In KI.ordo projects, agents produce drafts for individual tasks and people approve them.

AI prototype development

An AI prototype is an early, working version of an AI application that lets a team test an idea quickly and at modest cost. Rather than planning for months, you try it with real data and users to see whether the AI solves the task reliably enough, which data is missing and what value it delivers. Example: an assistant that pre-sorts customer enquiries is trialled on part of the inbox for two weeks before deciding on a wider roll-out.

Human-in-the-Loop

Human-in-the-loop describes workflows in which people step into an AI process at defined points: they review results, approve or correct them, or take over difficult cases. The principle reduces the risk of faulty output and keeps accountability with people, especially for decisions affecting individuals, money or legal matters. Example: an AI agent drafts replies to customer enquiries and a member of staff checks them before they are sent.

Return on AI (ROAI)

Return on AI describes the economic return of an AI deployment relative to its costs. A simple rough calculation is: hours saved per month × hourly rate, minus the costs of licences, model usage, set-up and support. If a team handling 200 requests needs 4 instead of 10 minutes per request, it saves 20 hours a month. Such calculations remain estimates; quality, error rates and onboarding time should also be taken into account.

AI Research Grants

AI research grants and funding finance research projects, early-career groups or collaborations in artificial intelligence. In Germany, for example, the German Research Foundation (DFG) funds Emmy Noether groups on AI methods as part of its AI initiative, while the Federal Ministry of Research, Technology and Space (BMFTR) awards funding through thematic funding guidelines. At EU level, Horizon Europe and the European Research Council (ERC) run calls. Deadlines and conditions change continually (as of October 2026).
