Pattern recognition

What is Pattern recognition?

Pattern recognition is the automatic identification of regularities, structures or recurring features in data such as images, sounds, texts or measurements. Systems assign new observations to known categories or discover groups without predefined labels. Applications include facial recognition, handwriting recognition, quality inspection in manufacturing and spotting unusual transactions. The discipline is an important foundation of machine learning.

Machine learning

Machine learning is a branch of artificial intelligence in which computers derive patterns from data instead of having every rule explicitly programmed. Depending on the task, models learn from labelled examples (supervised), from unlabelled data (unsupervised) or through rewards (reinforcement). Applications range from spam filters and demand forecasts to product recommendations. Quality depends heavily on the quantity and quality of the training data.

Image recognition

Image recognition is a field of computer vision in which software identifies what an image shows – objects, people, text, logos or scenes. It is usually based on neural networks trained on large numbers of labelled images. Applications range from quality control in manufacturing and sorting product photos to supporting medical imaging. With images of people, data protection and potential bias require particular attention.

Classifier

A classifier is a model or method that assigns inputs to one of several predefined categories. Classic variants such as decision trees or naive Bayes are trained on labelled examples; language models can also sort texts based on a description of the categories. Typical uses include spam detection, sorting customer enquiries by topic and categorising receipts. Quality is measured with metrics such as accuracy, precision and recall.

Clustering

Clustering is an unsupervised learning method that divides data points into groups based on their similarity, without predefined categories. It reveals patterns nobody has named before – for example customer segments with similar buying behaviour. With texts, clustering helps sort hundreds of customer enquiries into topics such as delivery, invoicing or complaints and shows where the focus lies.
